Finding the Right Facial Cleanser and Exfoliator for Your Skin Type

A facial cleanser is more than just the first step in your skincare ritual. It lays the foundation for healthy-looking, radiant skin. By washing away impurities and excess oil, a good cleanser creates a clean canvas so your serums, toners, and moisturizers can perform at their best.

While daily cleansing is essential, there's another step that often gets overlooked. Exfoliation helps gently buff away dead skin cells that can leave your complexion looking dull or uneven.

This guide will walk you through the differences between cleansers and exfoliators and help you choose the right product for your skin type.

What Is a Skin Cleanser?

A cleanser is a skincare product designed to wash away makeup, impurities, and excess oil from your face. Think of it as a reset for your skin. It creates a fresh base so the rest of your products can work more effectively.

Cleansers come in many textures, including gels, creams, foams, oils, and milk. Foaming and gel formulas tend to suit oilier or combination complexions, while cream and oil-based cleansers are often a better fit for dry or mature skin.

The key to a good skin cleanser is balance. It should effectively clean your face without stripping away the natural oils that help keep your skin feeling comfortable. That's why a gentle cleanser is often the best starting point for any daily skincare routine. It removes impurities without leaving your face feeling tight or dry.

What Is a Face Exfoliator?

While a skin cleanser removes surface-level impurities, a face exfoliator targets the buildup of dead skin cells sitting on your skin's surface.

Skin exfoliation can take several forms. Mechanical exfoliation uses textured ingredients like jojoba beads or fine botanical particles to buff away dead skin. Chemical exfoliation relies on ingredients like glycolic or lactic acid to help dissolve dead cells. Enzyme exfoliation offers a gentler alternative by using natural fruit enzymes, such as papain or bromelain, to help loosen and lift away dead skin cells without any abrasive action.

Skincare tip: Exfoliation can feel intense for those with delicate skin, but that doesn't mean you have to skip it. The best exfoliator for sensitive skin uses gentle, naturally derived ingredients like fruit enzymes or fine botanical particles to visibly smooth the skin without causing discomfort.

These two products also fit into your routine differently. A facial cleanser is meant for daily use, while natural exfoliators work best once or twice a week. One of our best sellers is the EXFOLATING PEEL, a cream peel with natural jojoba wax beads that gently removes dead skin cells and helps visibly smooth rough areas. Its innovative texture is completely free from microplastics. Simply apply it once or twice a week to cleansed, damp skin, gently massage in circular motions for about one minute, and rinse off with clear water.

Choosing the Right Cleanser for Your Skin Type

Not every cleanser is created equal. Each formula is designed for specific concerns, so choosing the right skin cleanser starts with understanding what your skin needs.

Dry Skin

If your skin tends to feel tight or flaky, look for a cleanser for dry skin with a creamy or oil-based formula. These hydrating formulas help replenish moisture while gently removing impurities. Pairing a moisture-rich cleanser with a routine focused on the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles can also help give your skin a smoother, more supple look.

Oily or Combination Skin

If your skin tends to feel shiny by midday or you notice different textures across your face, a gel or foaming cleanser can be a great starting point. Oily & combination skin types benefit most from purifying ingredients that help keep pores looking clear while still respecting your skin's natural moisture barrier. Many people assume this means stripping away every trace of oil, but demystifying oily skin reveals that a gentle, balancing approach often delivers the best results.

Skincare tip: If you have oily skin, you might feel tempted to wash your face constantly. But over-cleansing can actually backfire. When you strip away too much of your skin's natural oil, your complexion can end up feeling even oilier over time. A targeted natural face cleanser lets you gently remove excess oil without throwing your skin off balance.

Sensitive Skin

A gentle cleanser with calming botanicals like chamomile or aloe vera can help soothe and comfort sensitive skin. Avoid harsh surfactants or added fragrances, which may not agree with more reactive skin types. For an especially gentle option, look for formulas that are certified microbiome friendly. The ZZ SENSITIVE Mild Cleansing Emulsion for example, cleanses face, neck, and décolleté gently and thoroughly while its innovative prebiotic and probiotic complex helps the skin look and feel balanced. Starting your sensitive skin routine with the right cleanser sets the stage for everything that follows.

Dull or Tired Skin

If your complexion looks lackluster, a brightening cleanser with mild exfoliating properties can help revive its appearance and support radiant skin. You can also pair a hydrating cream-based cleanser with a gentle weekly face exfoliator to help visibly reduce the look of dull skin & dark spots over time.

Mature Skin

As skin matures, it can naturally become thinner and feel more delicate. Look for hydrating formulas enriched with antioxidants like vitamin E and moisture-boosting ingredients like hyaluronic acid to help leave your skin feeling nourished and looking refreshed. A good cleanser paired with a dedicated anti-aging routine can help keep mature skin looking its best.

By tailoring your facial cleanser to your skin type, you give the rest of your skincare routine the best possible start. If your current gentle cleanser leaves your face feeling tight or uncomfortable, it may be time to switch to another cleanser. You could try one formulated for normal to dry skin, for example.

When to Use a Facial Cleanser and When to Use an Exfoliator

Knowing when to reach for your cleanser and when to bring in an exfoliator is key to getting the most out of both products.

Your Facial Cleanser Is Your Everyday Essential

Your facial cleanser should always be the very first step in your skincare routine, both morning and night. In the morning, it removes any oil or residue that builds up while you sleep. In the evening, it washes away makeup, dirt, and environmental impurities from your day. This clean base allows everything you apply afterward to absorb more effectively, whether that's a hydrating serum or a nourishing moisturizer. The same goes for your night cream and eye care, both of which perform best on freshly cleansed skin.

After cleansing, consider adding a toner to your routine before moving on to your serum. A toner helps refine and rebalance the skin's appearance, preparing it for the next steps in your routine. It can also serve as an added layer of environmental protection against daily stressors. For dry skin, the ROSENTAU Protecting Facial Tonee is a wonderful choice. Enriched with Alpenrose extract, it helps visibly address early signs of aging, while Multimoist CLR™ and rose water add a comforting boost of moisture.

To use your cleanser, dampen your face with lukewarm water, apply a small amount to your fingertips, and gently massage it over your skin in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft towel. The whole process takes about 30 seconds but makes a meaningful difference in how your skin looks and feels.

Your Exfoliator Is Your Weekly Reset

An exfoliating face wash or peel is not meant for daily use. Think of it as a deeper reset that you add to your routine one to three times a week, depending on your skin's sensitivity. Using it more frequently than that can strip away your skin's natural oils and lead to dryness or irritation.

When you do exfoliate, use it in place of your regular cleanser or apply your exfoliator right after cleansing, before any serums or moisturizers. This way, fresh skin can better absorb the active ingredients in your follow-up products.

After exfoliating, your skin is especially receptive, making it the perfect time to apply a nourishing mask. The NATUNEO Honey Spa Mask for example, features a hyperfermented PF⁴ Complex that helps protect the skin from the visible effects of free radicals. Summer Snowflake helps visibly soften the appearance of fine lines, while moss extract provides lasting moisture.

  • Signs you may be over-exfoliating include:
  • Redness or visible irritation
  • Flaking or peeling
  • Tightness or heightened sensitivity
  • Sudden breakouts

If you notice any of these, scale back your exfoliation frequency and give your skin time to recover.

Why Choose a Natural Cleanser?

A natural cleanser offers benefits that go beyond the surface. Unlike conventional cleansers that often rely on harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances, plant-based formulas tend to be gentler on the skin and more mindful of what you're putting on your body. Many of our cleansers are also vegan and cruelty-free, aligning with a more conscious approach to beauty. As a PETA-certified "Beauty Without Bunnies" brand, we ensure that none of our approved products or their ingredients are tested on animals.

Choosing a natural face cleanser is also a step toward a more conscious beauty routine. When your daily products are free from unnecessary additives, your skin simply has less to contend with, and that can make a real difference in how your complexion looks and feels over time.
