What Is Jojoba Oil, AKA Simmondsia chinensis Seed Oil?
Jojoba is a large, woody shrub with waxy, green leaves, native to the semiarid regions of southern Arizona, southern California, and northwestern Mexico. It thrives in extreme conditions: intense heat, drought, and poor soils that would challenge most other plants.
When cold-pressed, the grape-sized seeds of the jojoba plant produce a golden-colored "oil," which is technically a liquid wax ester. That's right — strictly speaking, jojoba oil isn't an oil at all, but a plant wax. And that's exactly what gives it its remarkable skin-feel.
Thanks to its unique composition, rich in antioxidants and skin-soothing compounds, jojoba oil is a wonderfully shelf-stable ingredient that blends beautifully into skincare formulations.
And for those wondering: is jojoba oil comedogenic? Rest assured. The molecular structure of jojoba closely resembles your skin's own sebum, the natural substance that protects and hydrates your skin's surface. That means it's unlikely to clog pores, feels non-irritating, and absorbs easily without leaving a greasy film behind.
What's in a Name?
The word jojoba comes from howhowi, a term used by the Tohono O'odham people, an indigenous community native to the Sonoran Desert, where the jojoba plant naturally grows.
Known by many names over time, such as goatnut and lemon leaf, this remarkable plant's legacy spans diverse cultures and beauty traditions.
Does Jojoba Oil Have Vitamin E?
Yes! Jojoba oil naturally contains vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant known for helping protect the skin from daily environmental stressors. Vitamin E also contributes to a radiant, healthy-looking complexion and may help slow down skin aging when used consistently as part of your skincare ritual. Its presence in jojoba oil enhances the botanical's overall nourishing properties.
Why Your Skin Loves Jojoba
Jojoba oil for skin has been used for centuries. Jesuit missionaries in the southwestern deserts of the U.S. and northwestern Mexico reported that indigenous communities extracted the plant's oils for various beauty and wellness rituals. Beyond skincare, jojoba oil for hair is equally prized: its sebum-like structure helps hair feel balanced, smooth, and less prone to breakage, making it a true multi-tasking botanical.
So, what is jojoba oil good for? Here are a few key ways this golden botanical can help your skin look and feel its best.
Moisture-Locking Nourishment
With a composition akin to your skin's natural sebum, jojoba oil feels velvety to the touch and hydrates deeply without leaving any greasy residue.
Thanks to its high molecular weight and low viscosity, it can help reduce water evaporation from the skin's surface, locking in moisture without blocking pores. This gentle layer of protection helps keep skin feeling comfortable and supple, especially after cleansing when skin can sometimes feel tight or dry. For anyone who tends to experience tightness or discomfort, there are simple ways to soothe dry, itchy skin naturally with the right botanical ingredients.
Over time, jojoba oil supports the skin's natural renewal process, helping to improve the appearance of skin texture and leaving your complexion looking smoother and more refined.
A Gentle Botanical for Sensitive Skin
Jojoba oil is remarkably well-tolerated, even by skin that tends to react easily. Its mild, non-irritating nature makes it a wonderful choice for those who want effective nourishment without the worry of redness or discomfort.
Studies suggest it may help support the skin's natural balance, contributing to a calmer, more even-looking complexion. That's why it's a valued ingredient in skincare for sensitive skin and appears in so many of our formulations across different skin types.
Sourced with Purpose: Our Jojoba Project in Namibia
At ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, we believe that beautiful skincare starts long before a product reaches your skin. It starts with the people and places behind the ingredients.
That's why our jojoba oil comes from the social and ecological project "Jojoba for Namibia," which we've proudly supported as an official partner since 2017. The project was founded by the non-profit organization Namib Desert Jojoba, initiated by Oliver Rust, a fourth-generation Namibian of German descent.
Empowering Communities, Growing Opportunities
Namibia faces extreme income inequality, with the wealthiest 10% earning 130 times more than the poorest 10%. A fair, stable income is often the only path out of poverty — and that's exactly what this project provides.
"Jojoba for Namibia" supports the development of organic jojoba plantations in rural regions. Workers receive hands-on training in organic cultivation, care, and harvesting. After the three-year growth phase of the jojoba shrubs, they can transition into self-employment, managing their own plantations with the knowledge and confidence to succeed independently.
The project provides fair, secure income to local communities, especially women. Many mothers invest their earnings in their children's nutrition and education, creating a path toward lasting change.
Rosa's Story: "Something I Fought For"
One farmer who holds a special place in our hearts is Rosa Smit. She lives with her eleven children on 20 hectares of land in the heart of the Namib Desert.
For over 20 years, Rosa has managed her own small farm, raising sheep and goats, growing fruit and vegetables. But the extreme desert conditions made it an ongoing struggle. When she joined the "Jojoba for Namibia" project, everything changed.
Together with Namib Desert Jojoba, we've supported Rosa in building her own organic jojoba plantation. Our partnership includes funding for fencing against wildlife, well construction, and road access. We've also sponsored 1,000 jojoba shrubs, covering seeds, irrigation, and care through the first harvest. Rosa named her plantation "Il Gubasen." It means: "Something I fought for."
Why this matters for your skincare
Every ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND product containing jojoba oil is connected to this story, to Rosa, to fair wages, to organic farming in one of the world's most challenging landscapes. When you choose our products, you're choosing skincare with purpose.

Why Organic Matters: Choosing the Best Jojoba Oil
Because jojoba oil is applied directly to the skin, choosing oils derived from organically grown Simmondsia chinensis plants helps avoid exposure to synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and chemical residues.
Organic farming practices also help preserve the oil's natural profile of vitamin E, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants, supporting its ability to hydrate, soothe, and help skin look and feel its healthiest.
Here at ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND, we incorporate high-quality plant oils into our products and prioritize ingredients sourced through organic cultivation and responsible wild harvesting wherever possible. Many of our formulations are also certified as vegan cosmetics, reflecting our commitment to skincare that respects both people and planet. Our jojoba oil from Namibia is a perfect example, combining the highest quality with genuine social impact.
Your Jojoba Oil Questions, Answered
Jojoba oil is a versatile botanical that deeply moisturizes, helps balance the skin's natural oil production, and supports a healthy-looking skin barrier. Its gentle nature makes it suitable for all skin types — from dry and sensitive to oily and blemish-prone. It's also valued in haircare for helping reduce frizz and supporting smoother, stronger-looking strands.
Jojoba oil is generally very well-tolerated, but like any botanical ingredient, it can cause mild reactions in rare cases. A patch test is always a good idea if you're trying it for the first time. On its own, it acts primarily as an emollient and moisture-locking layer rather than a deep hydrator, which is why it works best when combined with other active ingredients as in our formulations.
Yes, absolutely. Jojoba oil closely mimics your skin's natural sebum, which means it moisturizes without feeling greasy and won't clog pores. It's suitable for almost all skin types and helps balance oil production, making it a wonderful ingredient in daily facial care.
Jojoba oil is hypoallergenic and safe for most people to use topically. In very rare cases, it may trigger a mild allergic reaction such as hives or itching. If you have highly sensitive or allergy-prone skin, a simple patch test beforehand will help you feel confident it's right for you.
On its own, jojoba oil is not effective at fading dark spots or hyperpigmentation. It nourishes and supports the skin barrier but does not contain the active ingredients needed to reduce excess melanin. For visible results, look for targeted formulations like our NATUPERFECT Skin Tone Balancing & Brightening Fluid, which combines jojoba oil with Detoxophane® from garden cress to visibly reduce age and pigment spots and help prevent new hyperpigmentation from forming.
